Photography Tip of the Week: Parents, if you want to take photographs of local high school football using a point-and-shoot camera, get permission from the Athletic Director and learn the rules of where you may and may not stand. Don't try to get closer than what is safe. You don't want to be the story because you interfered with the action. Keep your eyes open and head on a swivel to avoid blocking sight lines of the pro photographers and videographers who are working the game. Point-and-shoot cameras can take wonderful images if there is enough sunlight. Get your shots in the first quarter of the first game or two. Once the sun goes down or you are in dark shadow, your camera is done for the evening. Watch the rest of the game from the stands. Then, digital slr cameras with fast lenses will be needed to capture the action.

I enjoyed looking at your photos very much. I too am a Canon shooter and love my 300 2.8, 85 1.2 and 70-200 28. I use the 5dMkII, and the EOS-1D MkIIII. I'm an economist/consultant to the Pentagon.
I'm also a member of Zenfolio and provide my images to the athletes of Hayfield High School in Alexandria, VA where my son is a varsity football player and wrestler.
